GOVERNOR CUOMO PROPOSES MARRIAGE EQUALITY ACT

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today submitted a program bill to bring marriage equality to New York state. The Marriage Equality Act permits all couples to enter into marriage in New York state, thereby removing the current barrier same-sex couples face in recognizing their relationships, protecting their families and obtaining essential benefits.

Specifically, the Act grants same-sex couples who seek to marry equal status under the law as well as hundreds of rights, benefits and protections that are currently limited to married couples of the opposite sex.

"From the fight for women's suffrage to the struggle for civil rights, New Yorkers have been on the right side of history. But on the issue of marriage equality, our state has fallen behind," Governor Cuomo said. "For too long, same-sex couples have been denied the freedom to marry, as well as hundreds of rights that other New Yorkers take for granted. Marriage Equality is a matter of fairness and legal security for thousands of families in this state – not of religion or culture. When it comes to fighting for what's right, New Yorkers wrote the book, and Marriage Equality is the next chapter of our civil rights story."

The U.S. Supreme Court has held that the freedom to marry is "one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free people." Further, the state assigns hundreds of protections, benefits and mutual responsibilities in a variety of areas to couples who marry, including health care and hospital visitation rights, child custody issues and financial matters.

However, in New York, many individuals who currently seek to exercise the freedom to marry their partners may not do so solely because they are of the same sex.

The Marriage Equality Act would remove these barriers by amending New York's Domestic Relations Law to state:
· A marriage that is otherwise valid shall be valid regardless of whether the parties to the marriage are of the same or different sex
· No government treatment or legal status, effect, right, benefit, privilege, protection or responsibility relating to marriage shall differ based on the parties to the marriage being the same sex or a different sex
· All relevant gender-specific language set forth in or referenced by New York law shall be construed in a gender-neutral manner
· No application for a marriage license shall be denied on the ground that the parties are of the same or a different sex

To ensure that the bill does not intrude into matters of religious belief, the Marriage Equality Act affirms that no member of the clergy can be compelled to solemnize any marriage. This bill grants equal access to the government-created legal institution of civil marriage while leaving the religious institution of marriage to its own separate and fully autonomous sphere. The bill also guarantees that religious institutions and benevolent organizations such as the Knights of Columbus remain free to choose who may use their facilities for marriage ceremonies and celebrations or to whom they provide religious services, consistent with their religious principles.

New York has always been at the forefront in advancing equal rights. In 1983, New York banned discrimination based on sexual orientation in state employment. In 2002, the state extended the same principle to the private sector by enacting the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act. That same year, the state recognized same-sex relationships by extending workers' compensation benefits to all those who lost a partner on 9/11. Passage of the Marriage Equality Act represents yet another significant step in granting full and equal rights to all citizens of New York state.

Attention Broadway Speaks OUT fans I know you are used to videos but we had some tech. difficulties so I am going to tell you about the Off-Broadway hit "A Perfect Future".

This play written by David Hay and produced by my dear friend Andy Sandberg features an all star cast of Broadway and film veterans. Donna Bullock, Scott Drummond, Daniel Oreskes, and Michael T. Weiss portray a married couple and two men set up on a blind encounter with the entire evening starting out refreshing and bubbly to rapidly falling apart showing the true colors and feelings of these four individuals.

Donna Bullock was who stood out the most to me with her portrayal of a documentary film maker who seems to be stuck in a marriage that no longer has the passion and longing it once had due to her husband, Michael T. Weiss, keeping deep feelings about race hidden just below the surface.

Since this is Broadway Speaks OUT, I should mention some of the gay themes in the show were brilliantly played by Daniel Oreskes who plays a man from the AIDS generation in LGBT culture and Scott Drummond who wonderfully shows the audience how in corporate America people can go against everything they believe and hide who they are just to get ahead.

I encourage you to go see this wonderful show while it is still running at The Cherry Lane Theatre.

Wilson Milam, the Tony Award-nominated director of Martin McDonagh's The Lieutenant of Inishmore, returns to New York to direct the World Premiere of David Hay's compelling new play A Perfect Future.

This darkly comic and provocative play explores the question of whether people can be married and truly love each other when their political persuasions are diametrically opposed.

New York power couple John and Natalie are hosting a dinner for Elliot, a friend from their days as college radicals. Also invited to the party is Mark, a straight-laced young man from John's risk management firm. With the help of a few too many expensive bottles of wine, the group's past and their long buried secrets resurface. Over the course of this raucous evening, their basic belief systems are upended, as the four must come to terms with what happens when we try to reconcile our idealism with reality.

This high-society evening is about to turn into a night of sexually charged mind-games that could change their lives forever.

Ben Cameron Cameron is an original cast member of Wicked, having opened in the show in October of 2003. Other Broadway credits include Aida and Footloose. Cameron toured the country in the musicals Footloose, Fame, Tommy and State Fair. On the 12th and 19th, he will present his solo performance piece with music, Different is Good, which charts his Mormon upbringing in Utah, and follows him through his arrival in New York City as a working actor.

Marti Gould Cummings moved to NYC at the age of 17 to study musical theatre. During his time as an actor, he toured nationally, was featured on several hit TV shows, and appeared in the Drama Desk nominated musical TWIST off-Broadway. As time went on he realized he was put on this earth to make a difference for the LGBT community.

Since forming BSO! with Anthony Hollock, Marti has become one of NYCs most influential gay rights activist. He has appeared on LOGO, been featured in top gay and Broadway publications, and presented album of the year at the OUTMusic Awards. Through the red carpet interviews,
sit down interviews, weekly talk show, and benefits he hosts, he truly has given a voice to the younger generation in the LGBT community. Marti will continue to fight for equality until all people have gained equal rights under the law.

ANYTHING GOES with Marti will take place on Sunday January 16th at 9pm at Vig27 located at East 27th Street and Park Avenue South. This event is free and open to the public with half off drinks. Vig27 will donate a portion of the bar to BC/EFA.

The play was first staged in 1966 by the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center and opened off-Broadway on February 10, 1971 at the Truck and Warehouse Theatre, winning the New York Drama Critics’ Circle & Obie Awards for Best American Play. Ben Stiller’s mother Anne Meara played Bunny Flingus in that original production.

As most of you are aware I perform several nights a wig in different shows I have created as my alter ego diva self. Well I recently was fired from one of these gigs for being...you guessed it...to diva and saying things on stage i shouldn't have said.
i now know what the great Patti LuPone felt like when Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber gave her the boot.
well...she was making alot more money and was on the west end...i was at a dive gay bar...so sorta the same.
either way this has put me onto a Patti kick and I came across this video.

so last night PBS decided to air Sondheim's 80th Bday celebration filmed at Lincoln Center.
This night was packed with every diva ever on one stage singing for the father of musical theatre.

I was just told from a friend of mine that my idol Stockard Channing and my mother Liza Minnelli will be performing for FREE in Washington Sq Park on World AIDS Day, December 1st.

From Playbill.com - Liza Minnelli, Stockard Channing, designer Kenneth Cole, model Tyson Beckford and "30 Rock" star Keith Powell will be joined by the Broadway Inspirational Voices choir for a special commemoration of World AIDS Day in Washington Square Park, Dec. 1 from 5:30-6:30 PM.

The event is part of the Light for Rights campaign, a global initiative organized by UNAIDS; amfAR; Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS; and the World AIDS Campaign. The campaign, in its second year, showcases the importance of fundamental human rights in the worldwide fight against AIDS.

The lights of the park will be turned off to remember those who have died of AIDS, as part of a similar ceremony that will take place at other landmarks throughout the city. The park lights will be extinguished and then re-lighted, after which the speakers will discuss the importance of fundamental human rights in the fight against AIDS.

Other New York landmarks that will participate include the Brooklyn Bridge; the New York Stock Exchange; the Plaza Hotel; Madison Square Garden; Carnegie Hall; Museum of Modern Art; Washington Square Park Arch; the Beacon Theatre; Madison Square Park’s art installation Scattered Light; Radio City Music Hall; the Apollo Theater; and 35 Broadway theatres.

The cast will also feature Adam Driver as "Frank Gardner", Mark Harelik as "Sir George Crofts", Edward Hibbert as "Mr. Praed" & Michael Siberry as "Reverend Samuel Gardner".

Mrs. Warren's Profession will begin previews on Friday, September 3rd, 2010 and open officially on Sunday, October 3rd, 2010. This is a limited engagement through Sunday, November 21st, 2010.

The design team includes Scott Pask (Sets), Catherine Zuber (Costumes), Kenneth Posner (Lights) & David Van Tieghem (Sound).

George Bernard Shaw's scorching tour de force Mrs. Warren's Profession tells the story of Kitty Warren (Jones), a mother who makes a terrible sacrifice for her daughter Vivie's (Hawkins) independence. The clash of these two strong-willed but culturally constrained women is the spark that ignites the ironic wit of one of Shaw's greatest plays.

Cherry Jones returns to Roundabout, and the American Airlines Theatre, following her role in George Bernard Shaw's Major Barbara (2001). Doug Hughes is a Resident Director at Roundabout, where he recently staged A Man for All Seasons (2008), Howard Katz (2007) & A Touch of the Poet (2006).

Mrs. Warren's Profession premiered on Broadway in 1905 at the Garrick Theatre and subsequently was revived on Broadway in 1907, 1918, 1922 and 1976.

Roundabout Theatre Company has a long association with George Bernard Shaw's work, having staged over twenty productions since 1971. The most recent Shaw plays seen on Roundabout stages include Pygmalion (2007-2008, dir. David Grindley), Heartbreak House (2006-2007, dir. Robin LeFevre), Major Barbara (2000-2001, dir. Daniel Sullivan), Arms and the Man (1999-2000, dir. Roger Rees), You Never Can Tell (1997-1998), Misalliance (1996-1997) and Pygmalion (1991, dir. Paul Weidner).

DOUG HUGHES (Director). Recent Broadway productions include The Royal Family, Oleanna, A Man for All Seasons, Mauritius, Inherit the Wind, A Touch of the Poet, Frozen and Doubt. This is Mr. Hughes' seventh production with Roundabout Theatre, where he serves as the resident director. He has directed on and Off-Broadway and for most of the nation's leading theatre companies. For his work on the Pulitzer Prize-winning Doubt he received the 2005 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play. He has also received Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics, Obie and Callaway awards for his productions.

GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (Playwright). Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1856, George Bernard Shaw moved to London at the age of twenty. He became the drama critic of the Saturday Review which was the first step in his progress towards a lifetime's work as a dramatist. His first successful play, Candida, was produced in 1898, the same year he married Irish heiress, Charlotte Payne-Townshend. He followed this with a series of classic comedy-dramas, including The Devil's Disciple (1897), Arms and the Man (1898), Mrs Warren's Profession (1898), Captain Brassbound's Conversion (1900), Caesar and Cleopatra (1901), Man and Superman (1903), Major Barbara (1905), Androcles and the Lion (1912), and Pygmalion (1913). After World War I, he produced more serious dramas, including Heartbreak House (1919) and Saint Joan (1923). One of his more notable works, Pygmalion gained much recognition when My Fair Lady, a musical adapted from the play, became a hit. Shaw is the only person ever to have won both a Nobel Prize (for Literature in 1925) and an Academy Award (Best Screenplay for Pygmalion in 1938). He died on November 2, 1950 at the age of 94.

Milwaukee pays NAKED BOYS SINGING

So the city of Milwaukee, which I find to be just fabulous, has just payed the Milwaukee Gay Arts Center $20,000 due to the fact that they stopped a production of Naked Boys Singing from happening.

Now I never have an issue with naked men or singing so why then did they stop this production.
Grant it the show is terrible but come on, let the local gays and ladies have their fun.

Thank goodness for the ACLU cause they "stuck it to em" and now the gay center as $20,000 and can mount an event larger production!

Hamingson) announced today that it would team again with Hair producers Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel to bring the critically acclaimed rock musical BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON to Broadway in the fall. Following a successful run at The Public Theater, BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON will begin performances at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre (242 W. 45th Street) on Tuesday, September 21.

A co-production with Center Theatre Group and in association with Les Freres Corbusier, BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON is written and directed by Alex Timbers and features music and lyrics by Michael Friedman. Complete casting to be announced at a later date.

Following a sold-out run at Public LAB in 2009, BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON returned to The Public for a full main stage production and opened to acclaimed reviews on April 6. It received an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical, a Drama Desk Award for Best Book of a Musical and a Broadway.com Audience Award for Favorite Off-Broadway Musical. When the show closed on June 27 after three extensions, BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON was the second highest grossing show in The Public Theater's downtown history.

A complete original cast album from Sh-K-Boom/Ghostlight Records, produced by Kurt Deutsch and Dean Sharenow, will be released in early fall; the album will include hits like "Populism, Yea, Yea," "Rock Star," "I'm Not That Guy," and "The Hunters of Kentucky."

Argentina is the first South American nation to legalize same sex marriage!
This is an incredible leap forward for the LGBT Equal Rights Movement.
This South American country is known for its beauty, its soccer, and its fabulous legend EVITA.
Now they will go into the history books as a true leader among the world, taking a step in a continent that is known for its deep religious conservatism.

As more and more governing bodies around the world make this transition into what is right and good for humanity our nation, "the land of the free" falls behind.
In a country where people strive to be equal and free, we in fact are not.
LGBT people can be fired from their jobs, barred from adopting children, and turned away at the marriage office.

We now have states like Arizona putting legalized racism into the law books.

What does this say for our country. Is the United States of America really United for all of just for some?

John McCain: Won't Follow Wife's Lead-From the Advocate

The announcement Wednesday that Cindy McCain had come out for marriage equality by posing for the NOH8 campaign may have changed a few people’s opinions about the former would-be first lady. But it appears that Mrs. McCain’s photo session has done little to change her husband’s mind about marriage rights for gay people.

Senator John McCain’s office has issued a statement saying that the senator respects his family members’ views, but that he is still opposed to gay marriage, The Washington Post reports. “Sen. McCain believes the sanctity of marriage is only defined as between one man and one woman,” the statement said. It's the same statement McCain made to Ellen DeGeneres before she got married in 2008 (see the video below).

McCain's statement on Wednesday, however, seems in opposition to what NOH8 creator and photographer Adam Bouska told The Advocate after his shoot with Mrs. McCain. When asked if his time with Cindy McCain gave him any indication that her husband might be budging on the issue, Bouska responded: “Um, I got that impression. I don’t know that I should speak much about it, but I definitely got that impression.”

On Sunday, March 21, Broadway Speaks OUT will present a benefit
concert entitled The Other Side of Broadway at Space on White to raise
funds and awareness for LGBT issues. Among the Broadway stars who will
be performing songs from their own albums will be Meredith Patterson,
Shonn Wiley, and The Joe Iconis Family.

Broadway Speaks OUT was formed by Marti Gould Cummings and his partner
Anthony Hollock in Fall 2008 after Proposition 8 took place in
California, denying thousands of couples the right to marry.

The two started a talk show online by interviewing friends of theirs
who have appeared on Broadway. This grew into a very successful
endeavor, leading to a hit concert series which benefits LGBT
organizations in NYC.

Broadway Speaks OUT! has attended The Tony Awards, The Drama Desk
Awards, and the Logos NewNowNext Awards, and has had the opportunity
to interview the likes of Liza Minnelli, Bette Midler, Audra McDonald,
Gavin Creel, Rosie ODonnell, and countless others about how their
careers are helping to pave the way for LGBT Equality.

In addition to this red carpet coverage, BSO! has a weekly live show
hosted by Marti, Anthony, and David Singletary. This show brings in
thousands of viewers every Tuesday night at 10pm. The topics discussed
cover a wide variety of hot topics relating to the mission of BSO!

The Broadway Speaks OUT! Concert series has benefited organizations
such as Broadway Impact and The Ali Forney Center for Homeless LGBT
Youth. Each concert features a wide variety of TV Stars and Broadway
entertainers. Each performer brings their uniqueness to the stage by
performing songs or giving inspirational speeches about why equality
is important for all people. BSO has raised thousands of dollars to

Two-time Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington will star in the first Broadway revival of FENCES, the 1987 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play by August Wilson. The production will also star Tony Award-winner and Academy Award-nominee Viola Davis. FENCES, directed by Kenny Leon, will open on Monday, April 26, 2010 at the Cort Theatre (138 West 48th Street). The strictly limited 13-week engagement will begin previews on April 14.

FENCES will be produced by Carole Shorenstein Hays (who produced the original Broadway production) and Scott Rudin.

The original Broadway production of FENCES opened on March 26, 1987 at the 46th Street Theatre (now the Richard Rodgers Theatre). FENCES was one of the most critically acclaimed and successful plays of the 1980s, winning four Tony Awards including Best Play, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, three Drama Desk Awards, including Best Play and the NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play.

FENCES is one of the ten plays in August Wilson’s sweeping Pittsburgh Cycle, focusing on the twentieth century African-American experience. FENCES takes place over eight years from 1957 to 1965. Denzel Washington stars as Troy Maxson, a Pittsburgh sanitation worker who once dreamed of a baseball career, but was too old when the major leagues finally admitted black players. As he faces off against the racial barrier at work and his own disappointments, Troy also grapples with his son, Cory, over the teenager’s hope for a football scholarship and with his wife, Rose (Viola Davis), who confronts Troy over a child he has fathered with another woman.

Denzel Washington returns to Broadway for the first time since starring in Julius Caesar (2005). He made his Broadway debut in Checkmates (1988). August Wilson authored Gem of the Ocean, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Piano Lesson, Seven Guitars, Fences, Two Trains Running, Jitney, King Hedley II and Radio Golf. These works explore the heritage and experience of African Americans, decade by decade, over the course of the twentieth century. His plays have been produced at regional theatres across the country and all over the world, as well as on Broadway. In 2003, Mr. Wilson made his professional stage debut in his one-man show, How I Learned What I Learned. His works garnered many awards, including Pulitzer Prizes for Fences (1987) and The Piano Lesson (1990), a Tony Award for Fences, Great Britain’s Olivier Award for Jitney, as well as eight New York Drama Critics Circle Awards. Additionally, the cast recording of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom received a 1985 Grammy Award, and Mr. Wilson received a 1995 Emmy Award nomination for his screenplay adaptation of The Piano Lesson. He received many fellowships and awards, including Rockefeller and Guggenheim Fellowships, the Whiting Writers Award, the 2003 Heinz Award, the 1999 National Humanities Medal from the President of the United States and numerous honorary degrees from colleges and universities, as well as the only high school diploma ever issued by Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. Kenny Leon directed the Broadway productions of August Wilson’s Radio Golf (three Tony nominations), Gem of the Ocean (five Tony nominations) and the Tony Award-winning revival of A Raisin in the Sun; for the latter, he earned a Drama Desk nomination. Directed by Joe Mantello, Lips Together, Teeth Apart will begin performances on April 9th, 2010 and open officially on April 29th, 2010 at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway (227 West 42nd Street). This is a limited engagement through June 20th, 2010.

Lips Together, Teeth Apart takes place on the elegant deck of a beach house on Fire Island. A brother and sister and their respective spouses attempt to celebrate the Fourth of July with a gnawing uncertainty that makes their affluent habits and petty prejudices sizzle in the summer sun. In this unforgettable comedy, Terrence McNally does for the beach house what Chekhov did for the Russian country estate.

Terrence McNally and Joe Mantello most recently collaborated at Roundabout Theatre Company on the comedy The Ritz at Studio 54. Joe Mantello, who is an associate artist at Roundabout Theatre Company, received a Tony® Award for staging the 2004 Tony® winning production of Assassins. He also directed Noël Coward’s Design for Living and Rodgers & Hart’s Pal Joey.

MEGAN MULLALLY (Chloe Haddock) is one of Hollywood’s most versatile talents – an actress and singer, she has appeared on Broadway, at concert halls, on the big screen, and on daytime, primetime, and cable television. She is best known for her two-time Emmy and four-time SAG Award-winning role as Karen Walker on the hit NBC Series “Will & Grace.” Up next, Megan can be seen on the 2nd season of the Starz hit cable series “Party Down” alongside Adam Scott, Ken Marino, and Lizzy Caplan, and as Chief on the new Adult Swim comedy, “Children’s Hospital,” an extension of the Rob Corrdry web series of the same name. She is also currently in development on Karen: The Musical, based on the character Megan made infamous on “Will & Grace.” Most recently Megan appeared on NBC’s “Park and Recreation,” on the big screen in 2009’s Fame based on the hit 1980 film, and in her critically acclaimed performance as Beverly Wilkins in the West Coast debut of The Receptionist at the Odyssey Theatre which wrapped in November 2009. PATTON OSWALT (Sam Truman) has released three hugely successful standup specials and two critically acclaimed comedy albums. His latest one-hour, Grammy nominated Comedy Central Special, “My Weakness is Strong,” aired the fall of 2009, and the subsequent “My Weakness is Strong” DVD/CD was released to tremendous success through Warner Brothers records. Patton made his dramatic debut in the acclaimed, Independent Spirit-nominated film Big Fan, in the lead role as “Paul Aufiero.” The directorial debut of writer Robert Siegel (The Wrestler), Big Fan catapulted Patton to the front ranks of every “Best Of” list of 2009. Also in 2009, Patton co-starred opposed Matt Damon in Steven Soderbergh’s feature film The Informant. Senate approves openly gay U.S. Marshal for Minnesota

Minnesota’s next U.S. Marshal will be Minneapolis’ openly gay Assistant Police Chief Sharon Lubinski. Her confirmation by the U.S. Senate was announced Monday morning by Minnesota Democrat Amy Klobuchar, who recommended her.

Lubinkski was formally nominated for the post in October by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate in a flurry of pre-holiday legislative activity last week.

U.S. Marshals oversee federal courthouse security, protect witnesses, transport prisoners, and catch federal fugitives.

Already one of the nation's highest-ranked female law-enforcement officers, Lubinski now becomes the state's first female U.S. marshal and one of only two women in the nation currently serving in the post.

Lubinski has risen through the Minneapolis police ranks since joining the force in 1987. She was a finalist for the Minneapolis police chief job in 2004.

Tyra Banks will be ending her talk show in 2010 after a five year run to shift her focus to producing for film and television, Banks announced in an open letter to her fans on her website and in an interview with People Magazine.

Banks, who won the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation award in 2009 for Excellence in Media, says she will be focused on launching Bankable Studios, a N.Y.-based film production company currently reviewing possible projects.

"This will be the last season of The Tyra Show," Banks tells People. "I've been loving having fun, coming into your living rooms, bedrooms, hair salons for the past 5 years."

Banks will continue to work on America’s Next Top Model, which returns in February, and True Beauty.

"You empowered me, and in turn, when I finally had a platform and the power and a voice to get across the points and the messages that are important to me, I brought you along with me, because you embraced me," Banks said while addressing the crowd at this year’s GLAAD Media Awards.

According to industry insiders, Bankable Productions will focus on empowering women and minorities through media.

Friedman Theatre (261 West 47th Street). The first two offerings of the season will focus on the New York premiere of TIME STANDS STILL by Donald Margulies, directed by Daniel Sullivan.

The Saturday, January 9 edition of After Words will feature Sebastian Junger, bestselling author of The Perfect Storm; Jack Saul, PhD, assistant professor at Columbia University and director of the International Trauma Studies Program; and TIME STANDS STILL director, Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan. The panel will be moderated by David Shookhoff, MTC’s Director of Education.

On Saturday, January 16, After Words will feature award-winning war photographer James Nachtwey and TIME STANDS STILL playwright Donald Margulies. The discussion will feature NPR’s Brooke Gladstone as guest moderator.

After Words is part of MTC’s continuing effort to deepen and enrich the play-going experience for its audiences. Held after selected Saturday matinees, these panels, featuring writers, cultural critics and journalists, provide provocative and illuminating insights into the political, cultural, and artistic contexts of the work MTC produces.

BIOGRAPHIES

BROOKE GLADSTONE is host and Managing Editor of NPR’s “On the Media.” Brooke started out in print journalism, writing on defense policy, strip-mining, broadcasting and cable TV. Her freelance pieces (on topics ranging from orgasmic Russian faith healers to the aesthetics of Pampers to NPR’s near fiscal crash) have appeared in the London Observer, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, and The American Journalism Review among others. She also covered public broadcasting for Current.org, wrote and edited theater, film and music reviews for The Washington Weekly. In 1987, NPR’s Scott Simon asked her to fill in as senior editor for his still-new program, “Weekend Edition Saturday.” Eventually they gave her the job, and a couple years later, she became senior editor of the daily news magazine, “All Things Considered.” She was awarded a Knight Fellowship at Stanford in 1991 and a year later she was in Russia, reporting on the bloody insurgency of the Russian Parliament and other stories for NPR. In 1995, NPR created its brand new media beat and gave it to Brooke, who covered it for six years from NPR’s New York office in midtown Manhattan, until she was tapped by WNYC several subway stops downtown to help re-launch “On The Media.” The program was reborn in January of 2001. It has since tripled its audience and won quite a few awards by brazenly showing how the journalism sausage is made. Brooke has won several awards too, including an overseas press club award and a Peabody. Recently, the Milwaukee Press Club bestowed on her the Sacred Cat Award for lifetime achievement, but sadly, “On the Media’s” staff stubbornly refuses to perform any of the associated rituals.

SEBASTIAN JUNGER is the author of three New York Times bestselling books including The Perfect Storm which was turned in a major motion picture. As a contributing editor to Vanity Fair and as a contributor to ABC News, he has covered major international news stories in Kosovo, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Afghanistan. His work has also appeared in Harper’s, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, and Men’s Journal. He has been awarded the National Magazine Award for reporting for his October 1999 Vanity Fair article, “The Forensics of War,” and an SAIS Novartis Prize for Journalism. He is also the recipient of a 2009 Alfred I. duPont Award. The documentary, Restrepro, which he co-directed with Tim Hetherington, is an official selection of the 2010 Sundance Film festival.

JAMES NACHTWEY’S career as a war photographer began in 1981 when he covered civil unrest in Northern Ireland. Since then he has photographed more than 25 armed conflicts as well as dozens of critical social issues. He has received the Robert Capa Gold Medal, World Press Award, Magazine Photographer of the Year, and I.C.P. Infinity Award multiple times. He has been named recipient of the TED Prize, the Heinz Foundation Award for Art and Humanities, the Common Wealth Award and the Dan David Prize. War Photographer, a documentary about his work, was nominated for an Academy Award in 2002. His photographs are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, among others. Nachtwey has been a contract photographer with Time Magazine since 1984 and is a founding member of the photo agency VII.

JACK SAUL, Ph.D is an assistant professor of clinical population and family health at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and director of the International Trauma Studies Program, a research and training institute. As a psychologist he has created a number of programs in New York City and abroad for populations that have endured war, torture and political violence and is known for his

innovative work integrating testimony, healing, media, and the performing arts. Dr. Saul consults to news organizations on staff welfare and provides therapeutic services for journalists and others returning from war and other humanitarian crises. He has a private practice in Manhattan.

Manhattan Theatre Club’s New York premiere of TIME STANDS STILL by Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies will start previews Tuesday, January 5 at MTC’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (261 West 47th Street). The production, directed by Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan, will open Thursday, January 28.

I was reading the advocate.com and saw dear friend Hedda Lettuce in the headline and just had to see what she was up to...well...read below & you will see it is a bright holiday for her this year!

A gay man has decorated the White House’s Blue Room Christmas tree with communists and a “legendary transvestite” named Hedda Lettuce, according to the conservative blog Big Government.

The blog post, which is headlined “EXCLUSIVE: Transvestities, Mao and Obama Decorate White House Tree,” takes to task gay designer Simon Doonan, creative director of Barneys, who oversaw the White House Christmas decorating this year.
It also includes close-ups of some of the Blue Room's Christmas bulbs, including one that features Mao Tse Tung, another with the president’s face near what appears to be Mount Rushmore, and a third featuring performer Hedda Lettuce.

But the bulbs weren’t part of Doonan’s gay agenda. As anyone who watched Oprah Winfrey’s Obama White House Christmas special knows, the White House sent bulbs out to schools and community centers across the country for decoupaging. And as Hedda explains on her blog, one of the lucky community centers was a gay senior center where she volunteers. So as anyone would expect, Hedda decorated one of them with her own pictures. She writes:

“I may never get equal rights, I may never be blond and pencil thin, I may never see Lady Gaga in concert at Madison Square Garden (I could not get a ticket) but one of my balls is hanging in the White House with my name for all to see.”

Golden Globe winners Jennifer Aniston, Mickey Rourke and Julia Roberts have been set as presenters at "The 67th AnnuAl Golden Globe Awards" on Sunday, January 17. The show, hosted by Ricky Gervais, will be broadcast live coast to coast on NBC (5 to 8 pm PT, 8 to 11 pm ET) from The Beverly Hilton.

They join previously-announced Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio who will present the Cecil B. DeMille Award to Martin Scorsese.

"The 67th AnnuAl Golden Globe Awards" will be seen in more than 160 countries worldwide and is one of the few awards ceremonies that span both television and motion picture achievements.

The special will be produced by Dick Clark Productions in association with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Philip Berk is President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Orly Adelson, president of Dick Clark productions, and Barry Adelman will executive-produce the special. Chris Donovan is the director and Bob Bardo is the executive in charge of production.

173 live-action feature films (105 dramas and 68 comedies or musicals), 15 animated feature films, 133 television series (79 drama and 54 comedies), 33 mini-series or telefilms and a record 69 foreign language films were qualified for "The 67th Golden Globe Awards" consideration honoring 2009 achievements.

In addition, a record 103 songs were eligible for the Golden Globe for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture.

Nominations for "The 67th Golden Globe Awards" were announced at 5:00 a.m. PT on Tuesday, December 15.

City Announces $25 Million Contribution to New Home for Signature Theatre within $800 Million,
1.2 Million-Square-Foot LEED-Silver Complex with More than 800 Housing Units and Hotel

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, Signature Theatre Company Founding Artistic Director James Houghton and Related Companies Executive Vice President Bruce A. Beal Jr. today announced a $60 million partnership to create a new home for the theater company. The Frank Gehry-designed Signature Center will be part of Related Companies’ $800 million, 59-story, residential building and hotel on 42nd Street and 10th Avenue in the heart of the theater district. The building will provide more than 800 new housing units, including more than 160 that will be targeted to low-income families. The performing arts center will feature three intimate and distinct theatres, rehearsal studios, a café, bookstore and administrative offices and will allow Signature to more than double its audience, with anticipated attendance of more than 80,000. The LEED-Silver building will create 700 construction jobs and is expected to be completed in 2011, with the Signature Center expected to be completed in 2012. Joining Mayor Bloomberg at the announcement, which took place on the construction site of the new complex, were New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate D. Levin and Signature Theatre Company Playwright-in-Residence in 2010-11 Tony Kushner, Executive Director Erika Mallin and artists-in-residence Bill Irwin, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Hallie Foote John Guare and Edward Albee.

“Signature Theatre Company is one of New York City’s most successful and fastest growing cultural groups and its spectacular new home will allow it to continue to expand,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “The $25 million commitment, combined with a $35 million private investment, will result in a new, world-class performance venue in the heart of the City’s theater district. The fact that Related Companies is moving forward with the major development project now is great news and will have a profound impact, not only on the cultural industry and the City’s skyline, but also on the local economy. There was a period when the future of the project was in question – as were its 700 construction jobs and hundreds of units of much-needed housing. But the construction unions, contractors, architects and engineers worked together to reduce costs and today it’s serving as a prime example that – despite the national economic downturn – large-scale projects are still happening.”

“The Council has a long standing commitment to the visual and performing arts of this City,” said Speaker Quinn. “We recognize that in order for the city’s theatres to thrive we need to invest in them. “The American playwriting community has never been more thriving with talent and interest and no theater serves our community better than Signature does,” said Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner, who will be Signature’s Playwright-in-Residence in 2010-11. “It’s one of the very few essential institutions in the American theater.”

“Related has a long-standing commitment to supporting the arts from our partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center to Symphony Space and we are incredibly proud of the public-private partnership we have formed with the Signature Theatre Company, a great New York arts institution, to create a world-class theatre complex on 42nd Street in the heart of the theatre district,” said Related Companies Executive Vice President Bruce A. Beal Jr. “We are also grateful to our entire development team, contractors, architects, consultants and members of the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York who are working hard to ensure that this large scale development project can continue to move forward in challenging economic times and as many other development projects remain stalled.”

“We are happy to be part of creating a new home in the New York City theatre district for the Signature Theatre Company,” said Architect Frank Gehry. “I believe in Jim Houghton’s mission of creating innovative theater and our goal was to design the spaces to support that mission. We’re all very excited about the direction we’ve taken and are looking forward to watching the first performance.”

“This new home for Signature will build on the company’s success, expands its commitment to public accessibility and serves both the local neighborhood and the city’s entire cultural community,” said Commissioner Levin. “By bringing together artists and audiences in a wonderful new space, Signature will enhance its contribution to the city’s identity, economy and quality of life.”

“I don’t expect in my lifetime to run into too many opportunities where I have the ability to participate in something that will be a lasting legacy for my community,” said Signature Theatre Trustee and Co-Chair of Capital Campaign Edward Norton. “I strongly believe that the Signature Center is one such opportunity where we can make a significant contribution to the future landscape of the arts in New York City.”

The City is contributing $25 million to the Signature Center. The theater company has raised $16 million for the project and plans to raise an additional $19 million. The Signature Center will feature three unique programs: the continuation of the Master Playwright Residency, which explores the works of playwrights with major bodies of work; the expansion of the Legacy Program, which celebrates the lifetime achievements of the artists who have previously worked at Signature and the introduction of a new Emerging Playwrights Residency, which will feature early and mid-career playwrights and guarantee them three full productions over the course of a four-year residency.

The entire 59-story complex will be built to LEED Silver standards. The building will incorporate smart design measures and premium efficiency systems that will save over $800,000 worth of energy each year, resulting in less of a draw on the City’s energy infrastructure and lower energy bills for each of its tenants and over 1,800 anticipated residents. The project also anticipates another $100,000 worth of electricity savings by using fluorescent lamps instead of incandescent bulbs for the building’s temporary lighting during construction. While Frank Gehry is designing the theater center, Arquitectonica and Ismael Leyva are designing the rest of the building.

Founded in 1991 by James Houghton, Signature is the first theatre company to devote an entire season to the work of a single playwright, providing audiences with re-examinations of past writings, as well as New York and world premieres. Since 2005, Signature has been committed to presenting its world-class programming at an affordable price: the Signature Ticket Initiative, with major support form Time Warner, offers subsidized $20 tickets to all performances. Signature’s initiative has become a model in breaking down price barriers to theatre, helping to attract younger and more diverse audiences.

Signature is currently running the critically acclaimed The Orphans’ Home Cycle by Horton Foote, a nine hour, three-part theatrical event and the company’s most ambitious programming to date (22 actors, multiple set locations). Signature will celebrate its 20th anniversary in the 2010-11 season by presenting a season of works by Pulitzer-Prize winner Tony Kushner, including the first New York revival of Angels in America. Signature, its productions and its resident writers have been recognized with a Pulitzer Prize, eleven Lucille Lortel Awards, fifteen Obie Awards, five Drama Desk Awards and nineteen AUDELCO Awards, among many other distinctions. Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director) is pleased to announce Terrence McNally’s comedy Lips Together, Teeth Apart will star Megan Mullally (Chloe Haddock) and Patton Oswalt (Sam Truman).

Directed by Joe Mantello, Lips Together, Teeth Apart will begin performances on April 9th, 2010 and open officially on April 29th, 2010 at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway (227 West 42nd Street). This is a limited engagement through June 20th, 2010.

The design team includes John Lee Beatty (Sets), Tom Broecker (Costumes), Paul Gallo (Lights) and Darron West (Sound).

Lips Together, Teeth Apart takes place on the elegant deck of a beach house on Fire Island. A brother and sister and their respective spouses attempt to celebrate the Fourth of July with a gnawing uncertainty that makes their affluent habits and petty prejudices sizzle in the summer sun. In this unforgettable comedy, Terrence McNally does for the beach house what Chekhov did for the Russian country estate.

Terrence McNally and Joe Mantello most recently collaborated at Roundabout Theatre Company on the comedy The Ritz at Studio 54. Joe Mantello, who is an associate artist at Roundabout Theatre Company, received a Tony® Award for staging the 2004 Tony® winning production of Assassins. He also directed Noël Coward’s Design for Living and Rodgers & Hart’s Pal Joey.

BIOGRAPHIES:
MEGAN MULLALLY (Chloe Haddock) is one of Hollywood’s most versatile talents – an actress and singer, she has appeared on Broadway, at concert halls, on the big screen, and on daytime, primetime, and cable television. She is best known for her two-time Emmy and four-time SAG Award-winning role as Karen Walker on the hit NBC Series “Will & Grace.” Up next, Megan can be seen on the 2nd season of the Starz hit cable series “Party Down” alongside Adam Scott, Ken Marino, and Lizzy Caplan, and as Chief on the new Adult Swim comedy, “Children’s Hospital,” an extension of the Rob Corrdry web series of the same name. She is also currently in development on Karen: The Musical, based on the character Megan made infamous on “Will & Grace.” Most recently Megan appeared on NBC’s “Park and Recreation,” on the big screen in 2009’s Fame based on the hit 1980 film, and in her critically acclaimed performance as Beverly Wilkins in the West Coast debut of The Receptionist at the Odyssey Theatre which wrapped in November 2009. Megan made her television debut alongside Elaine Stritch and Ellen Burstyn on “The Ellen Burstyn Show” in 1986. Other feature film credits include Stealing Harvard, Speaking Of Sex, and Rebound. Megan also is a talented singer, recording albums and performing around the country with her band Supreme Music Program. Next up, Megan and Supreme Music Program will make their international debut in the West End, performing at the Vaudeville Theater in London for eight performances in February 2010. PATTON OSWALT (Sam Truman) has released three hugely successful standup specials and two critically acclaimed comedy albums. His latest one-hour, Grammy nominated Comedy Central Special, “My Weakness is Strong,” aired the fall of 2009, and the subsequent “My Weakness is Strong” DVD/CD was released to tremendous success through Warner Brothers records. Patton made his dramatic debut in the acclaimed, Independent Spirit-nominated film Big Fan, in the lead role as “Paul Aufiero.” The directorial debut of writer Robert Siegel (The Wrestler), Big Fan catapulted Patton to the front ranks of every “Best Of” list of 2009. Also in 2009, Patton co-starred opposed Matt Damon in Steven Soderbergh’s feature film The Informant. He has recently been seen in Observe and Report (opposite Seth Rogen) and is beloved by children the world over for lending his voice to “Remy, the rat,” in Pixar Animation’s smash, Oscar winning hit, Ratatouille. TERRENCE McNALLY (Playwright) has won four Tony Awards for his plays Love! Valour! Compassion! (as well as the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best American Play and the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards for Best Play) and Master Class and his musical books for Kiss of The Spider Woman and Ragtime. Recent Broadway credits include the revivals of his plays The Ritz (Roundabout Theatre Company) and Frankie And Johnny In The Clair De Lune and Deuce with Angela Lansbury and Marian Seldes and Chita Rivera: A Dancer's Life. His other plays include Lips Together, Teeth Apart (Drama Desk Award Best New Play), A Perfect Ganesh, It's Only A Play, Corpus Christi, Dedication or The Stuff Of Dreams, The Stendhal Syndrome and Some Men. Earlier stage works include Bad Habits (Obie Award Best Play), Where Has Tommy Flowers Gone?, …And Things That Go Bump In The Night and Next. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long awaited new show “LOVE NEVER DIES” will have its World Premiere in London at the Adelphi Theatre on Tuesday 9 March 2010, followed by New York on Thursday 11 November and Australia in 2011.

“LOVE NEVER DIES” continues the story of ‘The Phantom’, who has moved from his lair in the Paris Opera House to haunt the fairgrounds of Coney Island, far across the Atlantic. Set ten years after the mysterious disappearance of ‘The Phantom’ from Paris, this show is a rollercoaster ride of obsession and intrigue...in which music and memory can play cruel tricks...and ‘The Phantom’ sets out to prove that, indeed, “LOVE NEVER DIES”.

“The Phantom of the Opera”, based on the French novel by Gaston Leroux, has proved a huge success the world over and has been seen by over 100 million people, making it the single most successful entertainment entity in history. The show has been translated into 15 languages and has played in over 25 different countries, including China, Brazil, Poland and Korea. “The Phantom of the Opera” opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London on 9 October 1986 starring Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford and celebrated its 23rd London birthday on 9 October 2009. “The Phantom of the Opera” has won a staggering 50 awards worldwide, whilst global album sales currently stand at over 40 million copies.

Ramin Karimloo will create the role of ‘The Phantom’ in “LOVE NEVER DIES”, having already played the role to great acclaim in “The Phantom of the Opera” in London. Ramin’s other stage credits include starring as ‘Enjolras’ in “Les Misérables” in the West End, ‘Chris’ in the UK tour of “Miss Saigon” and ‘Artie Green’ in the UK tour of “Sunset Boulevard”. Ramin also played ‘Raoul’ in the West End production of “The Phantom of the Opera”, as well as the role of ‘Christine’s Father’ in Joel Schumacher’s film, making him the only actor to play all three of ‘Christine’s’ loves.

Sierra Boggess will create the role of ‘Christine’ in “LOVE NEVER DIES”. Sierra made her Broadway debut creating the lead role of ‘Ariel’ in Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”, receiving both Drama League and Drama Desk Award nominations and a Broadway.com Audience Award for ‘Favourite Breakthrough Performance’. She also understudied the role of ‘Cosette’ in the U.S. national tour of “Les Misérables”. In 2007 Sierra was handpicked by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Hal Prince to originate the role of ‘Christine’ in the brand new production of “Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular”. “LOVE NEVER DIES” marks Sierra’s West End debut.

Joseph Millson will play ‘Raoul’. He has worked extensively in theatre, film and television, including many roles at both the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He was nominated as ‘Best Actor 2001’ at the Royal Television Society Awards, and as ‘Most Promising Actor 1999’ and ‘Best Actor 2000’ at the National Television Awards for his starring role as ‘Sam Morgan’ in five series of “Peak Practice”.

Liz Robertson will play ‘Madame Giry’. Liz Robertson has starred in many West End and regional musicals, including “The King and I”, “The Sound of Music”, “I Love My Wife”, “The Mitford Girls” and “Song and Dance”. She starred as ‘Eliza Doolittle’ in “My Fair Lady” at the Adelphi Theatre for which she earned rave reviews and The Variety Club’s ‘Most Promising Actress’ Award, as well as an ‘Olivier’ nomination for ‘Best Actress in a Musical’.

Summer Strallen will play ‘Meg Giry’. She, also, has starred in many West End musicals, including “Scrooge”, “Cats”, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”, “Guys and Dolls”, “The Boyfriend” (for which she was nominated for the 2007 ‘Olivier’ Award for ‘Best Supporting Role in a Musical’) and “The Drowsy Chaperone” (for which she was nominated for the 2008 ‘Olivier’ Award for ‘Best Actress in a Musical’). She recently starred as ‘Maria’ in the London Palladium production of “The Sound of Music”, having won the role whilst playing ‘Summer Shaw’ in “Hollyoaks” on television.

‘Fleck’, ‘Squelch’ and ‘Gangle’ will be played respectively by Niamh Perry, Adam Pearce and Jami Reid-Quarrell. Niamh has recently starred as ‘Sophie’ in “MAMMA MIA!” at the Prince of Wales Theatre and was one of the twelve finalists in “I’d Do Anything” on BBC 1, in which she came fifth. Adam spent four years with the National Youth Music Theatre and has subsequently played in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat” and “Evita”, both at the Adelphi Theatre in London. Jami has worked with the English National Opera, the West Yorkshire Playhouse, the Royal Opera House and the Royal Shakespeare Company, and was in the recent West End production of “Equus” and played the lead in “Depeche Mode” for television.

The cast will also include Derek Andrews, Dean Chisnall, Helen Dixon, Lucie Downer, Paul Farrell, Charlene Ford, Chris Gage, Lucy van Gasse, Celia Graham, Simon Ray Harvey, Jack Horner, Erin Anna Jameson, Pip Jordan, Jessica Kirton, Louise Madison, Janet Mooney, Colette Morrow, Tam Mutu, Ashley Nottingham, Tom Oakley, Mark Skipper, Jonathan Stewart, Tim Walton and Annette Yeo.

Lyricist Glenn Slater was nominated for the 2008 Tony and Grammy Awards for Disney’s theatrical production of “The Little Mermaid”. He is lyricist on the current London production of “Sister Act”. Bob Crowley, set and costume designer, recently worked on “Phèdre” with Helen Mirren at the National Theatre. His many award-winning productions include “The History Boys”, “Les Liaisons Dangereuses”, Disney’s “Aida”, “Mary Poppins” and “The Year of Magical Thinking”. Choreographer Jerry Mitchell recently made his directorial debut with “Legally Blonde”, both on Broadway and in the West End, and choreographed the award-winning musical productions of “La Cage aux Folles”, “Hairspray”, “The Full Monty” and “Catch Me If You Can”, which recently opened in Seattle. Director Jack O’Brien directed the award-winning London production of “Hairspray” and won Tony awards for the Broadway productions of Tom Stoppard’s “The Coast of Utopia”, “Hairspray” and the 2004 production of “Henry IV”. His other productions include Stoppard’s “The Invention of Love”, “The Full Monty”, “Hapgood”, “Damn Yankees”, “The Little Foxes”, “Catch Me If You Can”, and operas including “Street Scene” at New York City Opera and “Il Triticco” at the Metropolitan Opera.

The World Premiere of “LOVE NEVER DIES” will take place in London on 9 March 2010 at the Adelphi Theatre. Previews begin on 20 February. The show will subsequently open in New York on 11 November 2010 and then in Australia in 2011.

March 2010 sees the Polydor/Universal release of the album of “LOVE NEVER DIES”, the long awaited follow up to “The Phantom Of The Opera” (the eighth best-selling album of ALL TIME, unprecedented for a musical theatre album). The album release will coincide with the opening of the show in London’s West End and will be available in both deluxe and standard versions.

Performances in London at the Adelphi Theatre will be Mondays - Saturdays at 7.30pm, with Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. Lauren Elder recently made her Broadway debut in the musical Hair. The Tony Awards were AMAZING!!!
1st off...seeing everyone wearing white ribbons for marriage equality ROCKED...I was so happy to be giving them to the stars before the show :)
after conducting some of the most fun interviews ever on the red carpet, I went up to the Rainbow Room at 30Rock to watch the show!
While in the press room I sat with the fabulous Ryan O'Conner. He is such a sweetheart and I can not wait to make a video with him!!!

Then being in the same room as Angela Lasbury, LIZA, and Jerry Herman was just...WOW!

Seeing my beautiful partner and love, Anthony, singing and dancing on stage with his cast of HAIR was the icing on the cake. I am so proud of him!!!
After the show his parents and I hoped in a car and headed to Tavern on the Green.
WOW...Anthony and I did the press line then chatted it up with John Stamos and Neil Patrick Harris!!!

well last night my dear friend Saycon Sengbloh was the diva to belt her face her! This girl is so talented it makes my sides hurt!
She has been in EVERYTHING on Broadway. Her credits include, WICKED,RENT,THE COLOR PURPLE,AIDA, & now the hit revival HAIR.
she is also an incredible recording artist. Just pick up a copy of her album, Southern Pinup and you will see that!
I am so proud of her and so happy to have seen her sing last night at Slash.

Bea Arthur, the iconic Broadway and television actress has passed away at the age of 86.
Since her Tony winning career on Broadway we have been enraptured by this talent. The original matchmaker in Fiddler on The Roof and the "bossom buddy" of Angela Lansbury in, Mame.
Ms. Arthur would go on to being one of televisions must recognizable figures through her shows, Maude and The Golden Girls.
These programs were progressive, liberal, and ahead of their times. Through her portrayal or Maude and Dorothy she won two Emmy Awards and was nominated for 9 Golden Globe Awards.
Bea, you will be missed by me and millions more, Thank you for being a friend.

The concert benefited the grass roots marriage equality group, Broadway Impact.

Ugandan Paper Outs More Than 50

A newspaper in Uganda, a country with hostile views against homosexuality, listed dozens of gay individuals, including their names, occupations, physical descriptions, HIV status, and partners. The report, published in The Red Pepper on Sunday, names ordinary people like bartenders and bankers.

"This is a killer dossier," the report reads. "A heat-pounding and sensational masterpiece that largely exposes Uganda's shameless men and unabashed women that have deliberately exported the western evils to our dear and sacred society. They have been influential in spreading the gay and lesbian vices in schools to kill the morals of our lovely kids!!"

The writer then goes on to describe the list as so "nervebreaking" that those with hypertension may not want to read it, according to a scanned page of the article acquired by BoxTurtleBulletin.com.

"Short and big with dreadlocks, he is a flamboyant lad and one of the most talented guys in the music industry," one description reads.

"He travels a lot, especially to the U.S. on business trips. This homo star resides in Ntinda," reads another description.

The list ends with a teaser to next week's list of "more shocking things you didn't know about Homos."

Ugandan police have been given greater authority in investigating gays and punishing them in recent months. Ethics and integrity minister James Buturo expressed concern in October 2008 that the prevalence of homosexuality would diminish the population. "Who is going to occupy Uganda 20 years from now if we all become homosexuals? We know that homosexuals don't produce."

Miss California stated that she believes that marriage is between a man and a women. As much as perez hilton bugs me i am pleased he asked her about her gay marriage views. being the representative from california, where prop 8 passed, she should not be saying she is against lgbt weddings. she rightfully lost the title of miss usa. i am very happy she lost due to her bigotry.
miss usa needs to represent all americans.

the life of harvey milk

there is an incredible documentary from 1985 called the life of harvey milk.
this film won the best documentary oscar in 1985.
what an awesome film. it is a film that shows all the behind the scenes political crap harvey milk had to deal with. the film from this year that stars sean penn is indeed a master piece but this documentary truly shows who milk was.
where is our gay hero today? who do we have standing up now?
we need a speaker to step forward and take the place of harvey milk.
lets stand up and speak out like harvey...do not let his life be in vein.

Rupert Everett Trashes Gay Fatherhood

Actor Rupert Everett trashed the idea of gay men wanting to father their own children, charging that surrogacy is the outgrowth of a “tiresome” gay rights movement populated by “awful middle-class queens.”

"I think this surrogacy thing is crap,” Everett, 49, told the Daily Beast web site. “It is utterly hideous. I think it's egocentric and vain.”

The openly gay star of films including My Best Friend’s Wedding and Shrek the Third extended his attack to lesbians.

“I mean, if you are meant to have babies then great,” he said. “But this whole idea of two gay guys filling a cocktail shaker with their sperm and impregnating some grim lesbian and then it gets cut out is just really weird.”

Everett, who said he would adopt or foster if he wanted to parent, positioned his harsh comments as a defense against the mainstreaming of gay culture.

”It's all Abercrombie & Fitch and strollers,” scoffed the outlaw Everett, who reportedly earned £1m alone from a publishers' advance for his memoirs in 2005.

if 2 people want to have a child and the only way they have to make a biological baby is to go through insemination then so be it! it is their choice and their decision on how they want to live their lives as parents.
